McGreevey: Glorying In His Shame
by Larry Ray Hafley
Two weeks ago, the governor of New Jersey announced that he was "a gay American" and was resigning his office because of an alleged homosexual affair. (Should Catholic priests confess that they are "pedophile Americans" and resign their office?) Immediately, his public approval ratings went up 2%. What does that tell you about this country? A great deal. And none of it is good. With tears of sorrow, Paul spoke of such men-"whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame who set their mind on earthly things." (Phil. 3:19).
We should not be surprised by those who have risen to defend McGreevey. Remember Bill Clinton? If a doctor with a patient or a college professor with a student had done what he did, he would have been summarily dismissed. Now, though, it is different. Again, what does that say about us? I am not sure I want to hear the answer, but here it is anyway. "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God" (Psa. 9:17). "Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a disgrace to any people" (Prov. 14:34). "It is an abomination for kings to commit wickedness, for a throne is established by righteousness" (Prov. 16:12).
Consider the long term impact and import of those passages of Scripture on the future of our country. Scary, ain’t it?
