A Good Lady
 by Larry Ray Hafley
She raised a large family. She did so with much difficulty and many afflictions, not the least of which was a husband who, though likeable and well meaning, undermined the truth by the careless way he lived. He was fiercely protective of his family. He smoked. Some said he drank some. He would “argue the Bible,” and curse and swear while doing so, especially if someone said something he found particularly “stupid.”

As his children grew to maturity, he quit attending services. His sweet wife did, everyone said, “the best she could,” but, despite that, she lost all her children to the devil. One became a drunk, ruining a career and a marriage in the process. Another also “left the church.” His boy joined a denomination. Still another became a local drug pusher, or so it was whispered. The other children “never darkened the doorway of the church,” and though “they are good people,” they have no fear of God and are raising another generation of “younguns” for eternal destruction in the blackness of darkness forever.

Her husband died several years ago. At death, he was still “contending for the faith” and living like the world. She lived alone and grew old and blind. Everyone says she never lost her “sweet ways” and that she “was always smiling.” Sadly, I had not seen her much the past thirty years. So, when news of her death came today, I sighed for her and thought of a good lady and days gone by.
